Quick Tricks Knitted Hat Pattern
If you are accustomed to knitting socks on double-pointed needles then this ribbed hat pattern from 1954 will pose no mysteries for you. It is simple, cute, and speedy to make – which are no doubt all the reasons why this pattern was chosen for inclusion in Coats & Clark’s Quick Tricks Book No. 307.
MATERIALS
CHADWICK’S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E.232: 3 skeins (1 oz. “Tangle-Proof” Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 515 Dk. Turquoise.
Clark’s O.N.T. Plastic Double-Pointed Sock Needles, 1 set No. 4 (3.5mm size) and 1 set No. 5 (3.75mm size).
Gauge: No. 5 needles – 5 sts make 1 inch, 15 rows make 2 inches.
PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
Starting at center of Crown with No. 4 needles, cast on 10 sts. Divide sts among 3 needles, being careful not to twist sts. Join and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 as follows:
1st and all uneven rnds: *K 1, p 1. Repeat from * all around.
2nd rnd: Inc 2 sts in first st, * p 1, inc 2 sts in next st. Repeat from * around, ending with p 1.
4th rnd: K 1, p 1, * inc 2 sts in next st, p 1, k 1, p 1. Repeat from * around, ending with inc 2 sts in next st, p 1. (30 sts).
6th rnd: (K 1, p 1) twice; * inc 2 sts in next st, (p 1, k 1) twice; p 1. Repeat from * around, ending with inc 2 sts in next st, p 1. (40 sts).
8th rnd: (K 1, p 1) 3 times; * inc 2 sts in next st, (p 1, k 1) 3 times; p 1. Repeat from * around, ending with inc 2 sts in next st, p 1 (50 sts). Work in this manner, increasing 10 sts in every other rnd as before until there are 110 sts on needles. Change to No. 5 needles and work in ribbing until piece measures 6 inches in all.
BRIM … Now work as follows: K 1, p 1, * inc 2 sts in next st, p 1, k 1, p 1. Repeat from * around (164 sts). Work without increasing until piece measures 2½ inches from beginning of Brim.
Next row: K 1, p 1, * k 3 tog, p 1, k 1, p1. Repeat from * around. Bind off in ribbing.
Next row: K 1, p 1, * K 3 tog, p 1, k1, p 1. Repeat from * around. Bind off in ribbing.
Fold Brim in half and sew neatly to inside.
