How to Make a No-Sew Fabric Book Cover
Here’s how to make an easy homeade, no-sew, fabric book cover suitable for covering paperback or hardback books, photo albums or journals. The attached ribbon book mark is optional.
Craft Supplies:
- Scrap Fabric Pieces
- Fabric Glue or Stitch Witchery
- Ribbon for Bookmark
- Ribbon for wrap around
- Fabric Pencil or chalk
- Iron
.
Project Instructions:
Your Fabric will need to be at least 2 inches larger (all sides) than your book. Place your book on top of your fabric piece (wrong side) with the book completely open.
Draw a line around the complete outline of your book onto the fabric piece. Be sure to use a fabric pencil or other washable marker. Remove your book from the fabric and measure two inches outside of the line you just marked on the fabric. Cut at the 2 inch extension line. You now have a rectangular piece of fabric just slightly larger than your book.
Fold and press as indicated with the dotted lines. This line will be 1¾ inches in from the original outline you marked. You need to make your cover slightly larger than your book for easier insertion of the book into the cover. With Fabric glue, attach a few inches of fabric at the centre of the book cover between the folded flap and the front cover. Do not glue to the ends as you need the opening at the end free to insert your book.
Fold and press the sides as indicated with the dotted lines above. This fold will be 1 3/4 inches in from the first outline. With fabric glue, secure this flap to the fabric, leaving the ends open for insertion of your book.
To make your bookmark, cut a piece of fabric the width of a ribbon piece (ribbon should be wide enough to act as bookmark in width and length should be the same size of your book cover measuring from top to bottom of your fabric piece). With fabric glue, glue your ribbon back to your fabric piece wrong side. This eliminates the need to sew edges. Be sure to apply glue to the entire surface to prevent any fabric fray. With fabric glue, attach your bookmark (right side of fabric down) at the top right of your book cover as shown.
Flip and press your bookmark as shown and insert your book.
