How to Make Flavored and Spiced Coffee Mixes
by Jane Lake
I always make several beverage mixes for Christmas gift-giving, and spiced or flavored coffee is a perennial favorite.
There aren’t many people on my gift list who don’t drink coffee, so these instant coffee mixes are a practical, clutter-free choice, especially for difficult-to-buy-for people, neighbours or work colleagues.
Coffee mix in a jar also works very well as a hostess gift or for house-warming, or pack these coffee recipes in a plastic bag for camping trips.
Note: Tea lovers will enjoy this spiced tea mix and almost everyone loves the treat of a sumptuous cup of homemade instant hot chocolate mix.
Except for the Instant Cappuccino, all ten coffee jar mixes on this page contain sugar. See Sugar-Free Swiss Mocha Mix for those on a reduced sugar diet.
Store all the following coffee recipes in an air-tight jar, plastic bag, or other tightly sealed container.
- French Vanilla Coffee Mix
1/3 cup instant coffee
1 cup instant skim milk powder
½ cup powdered non-dairy coffee creamer
1/3 cup white sugar
¼ cup vanilla instant pudding mix
If possible, blend all ingredients together in a blender until you have a smooth powder. If you do not have a blender, place all ingredients in a bowl and use a fork or whisk to thoroughly combine.
Transfer the combined mix to a pretty jar or airtight container.
Label: “Add two heaped teaspoons to coffee cup or mug. Add 3/4 cup boiling water and stir to dissolve. Sip, taste, and stir in more mix to the cup, if desired, according to your preference.”
2. Fireside Coffee Mix
2 cups non-dairy coffee creamer
1 ½ cups hot chocolate mix
1 ½ cups instant coffee granules
1 ½ cups sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Stir all ingredients together in a large bowl. Makes three 2-cup jars.
Label: “Add two heaped tablespoons to a cup of boiling water. Stir well and serve.”
3. Cappuccino Mocha Mix
- 6 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons instant expresso coffee powder
- 3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa
- 1¼ cups powdered non-dairy creamer (your choice of plain or Irish Cream flavour)
- ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Makes 2½ cups of mix (about 10 servings)
In a medium bowl, stir together espresso coffee powder, cocoa, creamer powder, sugar and cinnamon.
Label: “For each cup of cappuccino, measure 4 tablespoons mix into a coffee mug and stir in 2/3 cup of boiling water.”
Although not strictly necessary, I’d suggest a gentle swirl of cream on top of your freshly cappuccino mocha. Also see How to Make Instant Cappuccino from the folks at Nestle that includes tips on how to make a frothy milk topping.
4. Bavarian Mint Coffee Mix in a Jar
2/3 cup instant coffee granules
1 cup white sugar
I teaspoon dried mint leaves
2/3 cup non-dairy creamer
Mix all ingredients and process in the blender to the consistency of fine powder.
Label: “Add two heaped teaspoons to a cup of boiling water; adjust to taste.”
If a visit to a Bavarian castle isn’t in your near future, enjoy the hint of mint and luxurious creaminess of this Bavarian Mint coffee mix.
5. Peppermint Coffee Cocoa Mix
½ cups instant coffee granules
½ cups non-dairy creamer
1 cup white sugar
½ cups cocoa
Pinch of salt
½ teaspoon peppermint extract
Mix all ingredients except peppermint extract. Sprinkle peppermint extract over mix and stir well. Store in airtight jar or container.
Label: Stir two to three heaping teaspoons into 3/4 cup of boiling water. If desired, add more coffee mix according to taste.
6. Amaretto Mocha Coffee Mix
1 cup skim milk powder
2/3 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup cocoa powder
1/3 cup instant coffee granules
2 teaspoons almond extract
Mix all ingredients together and store in jar with a tightly fitting lid.
Label: “Stir 1/3 cup of amaretto mocha coffee mix into one cup of boiling water, until dissolved.”
Savor the flavors! Chocolatey coffee with an overlay of amaretto and brown sugar? And a topping of whipped cream at serving time? Yum.
7. Cinnamon ‘n’ Spice Coffee Mix
1¼ cup instant coffee granules
1 cup white or brown sugar
1 teaspoon each ground allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon
Blend all ingredients together, for 10 to 15 seconds in a blender, to make a fine powder.
Label: “Add two teaspoons of spiced coffee mix to a cup or mug of boiling water; adjust to taste.”
8. Instant Cappuccino
¾ cup instant coffee granules
1 cup instant hot chocolate powder
1 cup non-dairy powdered creamer
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Stir together all ingredients until well combined.
Label: “Use two or three tablespoons of mix per mug of boiling water. Stir to dissolve.”
Again, I recommend reading the tips from Nestle on how to make instant cappuccino including how to make that frothy milk topping at home.
9. Toffee Coffee Jar Mix
1 cup instant coffee granules
2 cups skim milk powder
1 cup non-dairy coffee creamer
1 cup brown sugar
¼ cup instant butterscotch pudding mix
Stir all ingredients together, then store in a tightly lidded jar.
Label: “Add two to three teaspoons of mix to a coffee cup or mug. Add 3/4 cup of boiling water and stir well.”

Thank you for the positive feedback. It took quite a while for me to put all ten recipes on one page but I’m pleased with the way it turned out.
Your comment made my day!

How could you mix hazelnut instant coffee. I have been buying general international coffee in hazelnut for years. I would like to know if it can be duplicated. Thanks.

I love that flavor too! But I don’t know how to replicate it. If anyone has the answer, Sharon and I would love to know!
