PinCandle Making:  How to Make a Seascape Gel Candle

Embedded seashells and starfish are the focus of this nautical inspired gel candle to make yourself.

Supplies:

• 4″ Bubble Ball
• 8 oz. (1/2 lb.) Medium Density Gel Wax
• 51-32-18 Prepped Zinc Core Wick
• Seashells
• Fragrance (optional)
• Dye Block (optional)
• Glitter Sand, Regular Sand or Salt
• Hot Glue Gun

Instructions:

Left Photo:
Place a dab of hot glue on the bottom of your wick and place it in the center of the bottom of your bubble ball.

Right Photo:
Pour your sand around the wick and carefully arrange a few seashells away from the wick around the sides of the glass.

Melt your gel wax until liquefied. Add a tiny bit of dye if desired and fragrance. Stir well. Pour a small layer of gel wax along the side of your wick into the bubble ball (if you pour it directly over the sands, they will splash up into the gel and cloud it with particles). Let this layer set up until top is fairly “rubbery” to the touch.

Arrange another layer of seashells on top of the set gel. If you are using starfish, push two points into the already set gel. Don’t worry about them leaving odd indents as these will be fixed when you pour your next layer of gel wax.

Final Steps:
Remelt your gel wax. If necessary you may need to add a little more fragrance as it does burn off at higher temperatures. Pour this over the first layer. Repeat layering in the same fashion until you have filled your ball to about 1/2″ from the top of the opening.

Tips: We tested this using the light density gel wax and found that it didn’t have enough stability to keep our objects suspended. Particularly the larger shells. The medium density works best.

We frequently receive requests from customers wanting to use pot pourri, dried flowers, silk flowers and other flammable items in their gel candles as they have seen something similar in gift stores. For this reason we strongly discourage using these types of items for layered gel candles. Stick to non-flammable items such as seashells, glass or paraffin wax pieces. As always, let common sense guide you in your candle making endeavours.
